The scary flick featuring a celebrity cast which also includes TV chef Ainsley Harriot and Only Fools and Horses star Tessa Peake-Jones needs funding before its release.
A horror film shot in Islington with an impressive celebrity cast needs help to make it to the big screen.
The Devil Went Down To Islington was dreamed up by old school friends Alex Martin and Rutger Andre Wiltens on the way home from the Marquess Tavern in Canonbury.
Despite the two having no experience in film writing, production or direction, they managed to attract a stellar cast of English talent with current Strictly Come Dancing contestant Mark Benton, Spaced star Michael Smiley and former Teachers and Smack The Pony actor James Lance appearing alongside cameos from TV Chef Ainsley Harriot and Only Fools and Horses actress Tessa Peake-Jones.
Set over the Halloween weekend, the comedy horror follows an underachieving music teacher and his dodgy colleague who unwittingly sell their souls to the devil for three days’ good fortune.
The film includes scenes shot at Highbury Corner, Highbury Fields, Highbury Grove School and inside and outside the Marquess Tavern which in the film is known as The Old Hob.
Alex Martin, 40, a former Highbury resident, said: “We came up with the idea on the way home from the Marquess Tavern one night when we were a bit drunk.
“Originally we were going to call it The Roundabout as a play on the idea of selling your soul at a crossroads and I came up with the idea of setting it at the Highbury Corner roundabout.
“We sent the script off to Michael Smiley and he read it and liked it.”
Mr Martin, a who used to work in sales, and Mr Wiltens, a lawyer, funded the project themselves and with help from friends, but having filmed all the scenes need money to put the finishing touches on.
They are looking for help through crowd funding site kickstarter.com in the hope their film could be the next Shaun Of The Dead.
Mr Martin said: “We’ve done all the filming and editing but we’re short of money for finishing touches like special effects and music so we’ve set up a Kickstart campaign.
“We need to raise at least £12,000 to finish the film so we can start showing with the hope of getting it in to some festivals and on the big screen.
“I quite like the idea of holding the premier at Union Chapel in Upper Street.”
