Hackney tennis legend Anne Keothavong believes the players she has selected in her Great Britain squad for next month’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow can all finish their 2022 season on a high.
This will be first time the 39-year-old will lead the British team in a final of the prestigious women’s world team tennis tournament.
“This is a strong squad for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals and we’re keen to finish the year on a high in front of the passionate crowds in Glasgow," said Keothavong, who reached a career-high singles of world number 48 during her 15-year spell on women’s WTA circuir.
"All four players have experience in the competition and great memories of playing for GB."
Keothavong hopes her top draw 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu will recover from the wrist injury she picked up at the semi-finals of Hana Bank Korea Open in Seoul back in September in time for GB’s opening round-robin group game.
The Brits will start on November 8 against Kazakhstan, a country Keothavong’s troops beat in an epic World Group II play-off encounter at Copper Box Arena, Stratford back in April 2019.
And Keothavong has also selected vastly experienced former British number one Heather Watson, who will compete in her 34th tie in GB colours, alongside Katie Boulter and Hampstead’s Harriet Dart.
The 26-year-old Dart will make her fourth GB appearance and says she cannot wait to play on opening day at Glasgow Emirates Arena.
“It’s an honour to be part of the first British team to compete in the Finals and even more so that it’s going to be in front of a home crowd in Glasgow," said Dart.
"I think we’ve got one of the strongest teams we’ve had in a long time and we can’t wait to show the fans what we’re made of.
“We’ve shown earlier this year that we can compete with the best countries in the world, so we’re ready to leave everything out there on the court, and we are all really excited to get started against Kazakhstan on the opening day.”
GB take on five-time champions Spain on November 10 and if they can win both of their group games then they could face last year’s runner up Switzerland in the semi-finals.
