A recycling centre is temporarily closed after five car batteries went up in flames.

The Hornsey Street Reuse and Recycling Centre on Hornsey Street suddenly closed today (August 19) after the blaze at 12.15pm.

Around 50 people had to evacuate the centre before the London Fire Brigade arrived.

Two fire engines and one fire rescue unit with around 15 firefighters were called.

Crews are still at the scene at the time of publication, 2pm.

The North London Waste Authority, which runs the site, described it as a “small fire”.

On X, the authority wrote: “We are working to reopen the site as soon as possible.”
