Two people have been arrested on suspicion of theft after a policing operation outside Finsbury Park station.

In total, British Transport Police (BTP) made three arrests outside the station last Thursday (September 5) as part of a wider effort to improve safety in the area.

An 18-year-old man from Kent was arrested on suspicion of theft after two phones, one of which allegedly did not belong to him, were found.

In a separate incident, a woman reported to officers at the station that her watch had just been stolen.

A woman aged in her 20s from London was subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft.

The final arrest was made after police stopped an 18-year-old man from Birmingham.

He was arrested on suspicion of having an imitation firearm after a loaded BB gun was found.

BTP said that the arrests mark the launch of its ‘Focused on Your Safety’ campaign, which is backed by the Metropolitan Police, Islington Council and train companies.

The force said that the campaign precedes the autumn and winter months, when robbery and theft reportedly see a “seasonal increase”.

It is expected that BTP will conduct further similar operations across the railway network nationwide in the coming months.

The new initiative in Finsbury Park comes less than a year after Metropolitan Police launched an operation in the area called ‘Love Finsbury Park’ to tackle crime in the area.

Superintendent John Loveless said: “Robbery offences will never be tolerated on the railway, and BTP are working hard to reduce offending and to expedite the identification and apprehension of offenders.

“BTP are committed to ensuring the railway is a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
