Streets around Islington will be shut to traffic this weekend so that families can “walk, cycle and have fun together”.
World Car Free Day is taking place across the country this Sunday (September 22), with communities closing off streets or neighbourhoods to reduce traffic and pollution.
Islington Council has announced that three streets – Fieldway Crescent, Highbury Terrace and Offord Road – will take part in the car-free day.
Fieldway Crescent will be shut between 10am and midday, so that families can “walk, cycle, wheel, and have fun together”.
The closures in Highbury Terrace and Offord Road will take place between 2pm and 5pm.
Highbury Fields will also host a festival of walking and cycling between 12pm and 6pm on the same day.
The free event will include all-ability cycling, head-to-head static bike challenges, guided walks and cycles through the borough, as well as pop-up stalls from local shops.
To mark the day, the council has also provided grants of up to £5,000 for businesses and community groups to run their own activities encouraging people to walk and cycle.
Plans to improve Highbury Crescent, the strip of road closed to traffic between the two sections of Highbury Fields, will also be on display between 10.30am and 1pm on Sunday.
