A side-street pub near Finsbury Park has been named as one of Britain’s best cosy boozers.
The Plimsoll in St Thomas’s Road has become a staple for locals ever since it was taken over by chefs Jamie Allan and Ed McIlroy.
Now fronted by Ed, the pub offers something for both drinkers and diners, with an original partition dividing the space between the two.
Last week, The Plimsoll was named among the top 50 cosiest pubs in Britain by the Good Food Guide.
The accolade has been awarded to pubs that serve up “relaxed, warm vibes, good local beers and even better cooking” – in essence, the perfect hangouts as the autumn draws in.
As with all good things, demand for space often outstrips supply at the pub – so make sure you book in advance if you want to eat.
The guide says: “Noise levels will be a factor for some, as will backless pub stools, but then the drinks are so keenly priced (for London, anyway)."
The grub on offer includes sea bass crudo in grass-green oil with rhubarb shards, rose-coloured pork belly with vivid spears of asparagus, and deeply flavoured clam broth with broad beans and pancetta.
Despite the flair, the pub prides itself on not being snobby about its food; “It isn't fine dining,” the Good Food Guide was told.
Their review explains: “[The pub has] established a following that borders on the cultish for food that doesn't turn its nose up at those who want a very good burger, but also essays experiments in visual bombardment.”
It is perhaps no surprise then that the guide gives the pub a ‘very good’ rating for ‘deliciousness’, while also ranking it ‘good’ for ‘uniqueness’ and ‘warmth’.
The Plimsoll’s popularity has also allowed Four Legs, the team behind the pub, to recently expand in the area.
Their newest endeavour – Tollington’s – can be found just off Stroud Green Road.
Offering a relaxed vibe, the restaurant pays homage to its namesake – the iconic neighbourhood fish and chip shop that used to sit at the site.
The new restaurant provides a Mediterranean twist however, with dishes and vibes inspired by regional Spanish coastal dining.
The Plimsoll at 52 St Thomas’s Road is open from 3pm to 11pm on weekdays, and from 12pm to 12pm at the weekend.
