A woman said she was too terrified to leave her home after she and her Shetland sheepdog were savaged by a pair of XL Bullies.

Laura Booiman and her dog, Blue, were walking home from Clissold Park on the afternoon of March 31 last year when the attack took place.

The huge dogs came from behind her on Beresford Road and attacked Blue.

Laura picked her dog up to save it from attack but the XL Bullies, named Asher and Leasha, jumped up at her and bit Laura’s legs, prosecutor Edward Kalber said.

She then threw Blue away in the hope that she would be able to run to safety but she was chased by the dogs, who continued the attack.

It only came to an end when two heroic construction workers armed themselves with recycling bins and hit the XL Bullies.

Laura described the XL Bullies as weighing around 60kg each.

On Thursday (October 3) the owner of the XL Bullies – Burak Uyanik, 30, of Highbury New Park – was jailed for four months.

Mr Kalber told London’s dog court, Willesden Magistrates’ Court, that Laura took Blue to the vet after the attack, at which point Uyanik arrived to exchange numbers.

But Mr Kalber said Uyanik became “abusive” towards Laura while at the vet.

He later denied charges of owning two dogs which were dangerously out of control causing injury, but was found guilty at trial.

In a victim impact statement read out by Mr Kalber on Laura’s behalf, she said: "Since the incident I’ve felt very on edge. I’m on edge when I hear noises at home, especially dogs barking.”

Laura said she was left scared to leave the house and had to take time off her studies.

The court was shown photos of large bite marks on Laura’s thighs.

Despite the evidence, Uyanik continued to deny that his dogs had injured her.

"I went back that day to see the lady and she did not get bitten that day,” he insisted.

Uyanik, representing himself in court, opposed the destruction of the dogs.

He said: “I am very fit to look after the dogs. The dogs never bit anyone. What else can I say, I shouldn’t be here.”

The court heard that Uyanik has an extensive criminal record, including convictions for robbery and assault.

Sheila Darr, chair of a bench of magistrates, sentenced Uyanik to 16 weeks in custody.

She said: “We have heard that both dogs are said to have been aggressive in the kennel and were involved in previous incidents.

“We do not find you a proper person to be responsible for dogs because they were not on a lead, you were not present and we also heard that you were abusive to the victim.”

Uyanik was banned from owning a dog for 10 years and it was ordered that Asher and Leasha be destroyed.

He was ordered to pay £500 contribution towards kennelling costs, £500 compensation to the victim and £650 prosecution costs.
