Artwork by special needs students is being seen by thousands of passers-by every day.

Works by students from the Shoreditch campus of New City College is on display on the huge ‘digital canvas’ near Old Street Roundabout.

They feature eyes, some realistic and others abstract, exploring ‘perception’ and the idea that each person sees the world differently while sharing fundamental connections.

“The digital canvas is a perfect stage for their creativity,” New City's special needs curriculum manager Shona Benfield said. “This opportunity lets them gain confidence as emerging artists.”

The students took time out from their lessons to see their work up in lights.

Joining them was Hackney Council’s member for special needs Cllr Anya Sizer, who also represents Hoxton and Shoreditch.

She said: “There is so much we can learn about how the students see the world. It’s a huge achievement that means so much to them to see their artwork displayed on this impressive public screen.”

The Digital Canvas project aims at ‘inclusivity’ in the arts. The artwork was being displayed every minute for 10 seconds until November 17, giving the students a public platform to show their creativity.
